THERE are four non-working holidays this month, including one that will cover only Cebu Province.
The number will increase to five once President Benigno Aquino III approves the request of the Mandaue City Council to declare Aug. 30 a special non-working day in the city.
Aug. 6, Tuesday, is a special non-working day in Cebu Province, as it celebrates its 444th founding anniversary.
Eid’l Fitr
There will be no work and classes on Aug. 9, Friday, which Malacañang declared a regular holiday in observance of Eid’l Fitr, or the Feast of Ramadan.
Aug. 21, which falls on a Wednesday, was also declared a special non-working day in observance of Ninoy Aquino Day.
There will be no work and classes on Aug. 26, Monday, a regular holiday in observance of National Heroes Day.
Aquino declared Aug. 9 a regular holiday in a proclamation order last Thursday “in order to bring the religious and cultural significance of the Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness.”
“To promote cultural understanding and integration, the entire Filipino nation should have the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr,” read Presidential Proclamation 629.

The Ninoy Aquino Day and National Heroes Day are among the 16 national holidays declared by Aquino in a proclamation he signed in August last year.
The Mandaue City has requested Malacañang to declare Aug. 30, which Friday, a special non-working day for the City’s 44th Charter Day celebration.
