THE Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) president Dr. Don Vicente Real announced Monday that he will recommend to the Board of Regents (BOR) the moving of the start of the school year 2014-2015 to August instead of June.

The Negros Oriental State University's BOR, the university’s highest decision-making body, will convene at the school’s main campus in Dumaguete City on Friday, February 14, for a special meeting.

Real said he will do the recommendation in consonance with the other Southeast Asian nations whose classes start in the month of August.

Other top universities in the Philippines also earlier expressed willingness to move their class opening to either August or September to align their schedule with the neighboring countries like Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

The University of the Philippines System announced last February 6 that the start of its classes for academic year 2014-2015 will be moved from June to August.

The Ateneo De Manila University also made the same announcement, but clarified it will implement its new academic calendar starting school year 2015-2016.

If implemented, the first semester under the new academic calendar will be from August to December, while the second semester will be from January to May, and the short term will be from June to July.
